1. The Most-Chosen 17-Day China Itinerary
If it is your first time to visit China and you want a highlight-rich and leisurely travel experience, this itinerary is suitable for you.
You could leave your footprints on the Great Wall, explore China's imperial past in the Forbidden City, see the inspiration for Avatar’s Hallelujah Mountains, and enjoy leisurely countryside life within a picturesque pastoral landscape.
- Days 1‒5: Beijing
- Days 6‒7: Xi’an
- Days 8‒10: Zhangjiajie
- Days 11‒14: Guilin
- Days 15‒16: Shanghai
Days 1‒5: Beijing
As the first stop and capital city, you are suggested to spend a little more time in Beijing to adjust to jet lag and have a more in-depth and authentic experience.
The must-see attractions that are regularly visited, like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, need about 3 days.
But for a deeper experience, you could spend more time on the Great Wall with a night visit and a stay in a town below the Wall, where you could have interesting hands-on experiences like tie-dying, or a camping and hiking tour.
For more authentic ways to experience local life, taking a rickshaw to visit the hutongs, visiting a local market, or visiting a local family and chatting with the host are all good ideas. We could arrange them for you.

An excellent 2 days in Beijing with guide Lily
We had a great experience with China Highlights and our tour guide for the two days in Beijing, Liu Yuan (Lily), was excellent. She is friendly, professional and very knowledgeable about the Forbidden Palace, Temple of Heaven, The Great Wall and the Summer Palace. These are the places we visited with her. She is patient and didn't rush us at all. She adapted the tour activities and schedule to accommodate our interests and side trips such as Bei Hai Park. She is also very helpful: she took the extra time to walk us to the pizza restaurant in a mall which we would not have found on our own. We appreciate everything Lily did for us and highly recommend her. more

Great experience in Bejing with Jack
We had an amazing experience with China Highlights and our Bejing Guide Jack. We travelled through China for two weeks with two small kids (3-5) and all the China Highlights Guides and Drivers went out of their way to make this a memorable experience. Jack and our driver Mr. Lee in Bejing were amazing and we had a wonderful time here. The kids loved the great wall and the topoganing down, the face painting and the rikscha ride - and we loved all the sights. Jack and Mr. Lee were very patient with us and the kids and we managed to see everything in a relaxed fashion. We can highly recommend China Highlights and Jack and Mr. Lee. more

Roger Li is a valuable asset to your company
I live in California and was referred to your company by a friend in Beijing for a group of 4, private tour to Beijing and the Great Wall in 9/2023. After I submitted my inquiry online, on 5/27, I received a reply from Roger Li within 24 hours. And it was the weekend. I was very impressed. I had a great experience with a private…
I had a great experience on a private tour with Roger Li. We went to Gubei Water Town and Roger climbed the Great Wall at Simatai with me all the way up, which was much more than I could expect. Roger is very kind and knowledgeable. I asked him for the real China food experience and Roger on the spot improvised a very special visit to a local family restaurant where through Roger’s excellent interpretor skills I could have wonderful conversations with the family and 2 other guests. All food was made fresh, veggies came from their own garden - and I ate a rare mountain plant salad. Superb day thanks to Roger. more

My second trip, was at Gubei Water Town. Again my private car and my guide Tom were wonderful. Tom was very helpful when I was on the great Wall of China, always lending me a helping hand and warning me when the terrain was uneven. Excellent scheduling of events, e.g. from the Great Wall I saw a drone show and a water fountain show. Both perfectly timed for amazing views. Tom was helpful in selecting places to eat and was knowledgeable. I would strongly recommend both tour guides Tom and Valerie. more

Days 6‒7: Xi’an
The highlight of Xi’an is visiting its top attraction — the Terracotta Warriors, which could be complemented with a special hands-on experience of making your own clay warrior. It would allow you to better understand the history and artisan-ship behind the Terracotta Army.
Shaanxi History Museum and Big Wild Goose Pagoda are also musts. You also learn much about China’s ancient and medieval history there.
For foodies, the Muslim Quarter is the place to explore local delicacies.
Days 8‒10: Zhangjiajie
Zhangjiajie National Park is definitely a breathtaking place to go. You could see Hallelujah Mountain and other pillars that helped provide the inspiration for Avatar. Its gorgeous steep trails are excellent for hiking.
Challenge yourself by walking on the world's longest and highest glass-floored bridge.
You could also take the world's longest cable car to the top of Tianmen Mountain and enjoy its eye-catching natural scenery of spiky peaks.
Days 11‒14: Guilin
In Guilin, you could slow your pace and enjoy stunning countryside views while doing some relaxing outdoor activities with your kids or partner.
Spend a day in Longsheng County to see its incredible terraced fields with a light walking tour.
And spend a day in Guilin for city sightseeing, followed by a river cruise to see the area’s celebrated karst landscape.
其他将在阳朔两天,当re you could take a bamboo raft, ride a bike, or ride a sidecar to explore the countryside. Walk between the paddy fields and meet the locals.
Days 15‒16: Shanghai
In Shanghai, the Bund is the place to go to capture its essence. An in-depth walking tour is recommended, which would take you into some of the old Bund buildings and bring you to an understanding of their golden age and backstories.
Shanghai is one of the most developed cities in China. You could go up to the top of Shanghai Tower, tallest building in China, to overlook the whole city, or take a cruise on the Huangpu River to see its skyline rise above you.
You would also get some free time in your last stop to wrap up your tour your way — enjoy a relaxing spa, have fun in a rooftop bar, go shopping...
2. 17 Days in China with a Panda Experience
If you want pandas on your 17-day-in-China to-do list, you could consider this itinerary:
- Days 1‒4: Beijing sightseeing with must-see landmarks, a hutong tour, and some cultural experiences
- Days 5‒6: Xi’an (the Terracotta Warriors, museums, and a food tour)
- Days 7‒9: Chengdu with a panda program
- Days 10‒14: Yangtze River cruise with shore excursions
- Days 15‒16: Shanghai (the Bund, Yu Garden, and some free time)
- Day 17: Departure
To make your first trip to China complete with a panda encounter, besides the classic route — Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, Chengdu — hometown of pandas —should be included.
We would specially arrange a panda volunteer program to suit you. You would have the chance to have a close encounter with some lovely pandas. During the program, you would get to go into pandas’ bedroom for daily cleaning duties, make their favorite cakes, watch them being fed, and get a souvenir certificate.
In Chengdu, you could also go to People’s Park to see what Chengdu people’s daily life is like. Try some interesting experiences that locals enjoy, such as a Chinese kung-fu tea show.
With a 17-day itinerary, you could also enjoy a leisurely Yangtze River cruise to slow down and appreciate the stunning natural scenery and other attractions along the Yangtze River.

Great Trip Planning Experience
我的家人决定在12月去成都-2023 and due to the winter time concern, I have decided to try a trip planner instead of self planned tour; and I found Chinhighlights, com.Roger Li is assigned as my trip planner and it is a great to have him assisting in my trip. Roger is very knowledgeable in what he is doing with a great sense of urgency; He is very upfront on his proposal and willing to listen on my feedback. Roger also taking the extra steps to prepare itinerary in 2 different language; English and Mandarin as my kids prefer to have details in chinese and my wife only on English. Thanks a lot Roger. We managed to finalize and signoff the trip plan within 1 week. Well done. I hope I will have an equal or better experience with china highlights on my upcoming china trips. Will update with next review after my trip ends. Cheers. more

Family China trip
We enjoyed our trips around Chengdu with Jason, China Highlights. We were on two trips - Panda Research Base and Leshan Budda. Jason took us to really good restaurant with dumplings as we told before that we like them :) The next day he presented the famous hot pot and helped us to cook it. During the trips he was very careful with our needs and was following them, what is really important while travelling with small kids. Our driver was also good, helpful with luggage and good-driving. They also had 2 baby carseats. Definitely recommend. more

Great long weekend in Chengdu
My husband and I are Aussie expats living in China. We just finished a great 3 day weekend in Chengdu with China highlights and our wonderful guide Helen. It was a real pleasure to have Helen as our guide - she was friendly, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about Chengdu and the sites we visited. She was also very diligent at meal time to ensure my food intolerance was accommodated - so we were able to still enjoy the delicious and famous food in Chengdu without any worries. Helen also organised for us to go to an evening show at the professional Opera one night which we really enjoyed. During our trip we also visited a little local opera house and had tea, saw the panda sculpture at IFS, went to Jinli old street, day trip to Leshan for a boat ride and walk at Leshan Buddha, Panda Breeding and research centre and a stroll around a local park to see how the locals enjoy their leisure time. The itinerary was great for the time we had and we enjoyed everything. It was also a very comfortable trip - our driver Mr Ren was very nice and we always felt safe with him at the wheel. more

Fantastic Chengdu family visit
We explored wonderful Chengdu and surroundings in 4 days. City tour in a relaxed way with delicious local snacks, really nice! Spectacular new dinosaur museum, Dujiangyan (combined Panda and dam in one outing, very recommendable), Leshan Buddha. All above super cool with the kids (ours are 7 and 4). Emei Shan impressive, maybe a little long driving to explore it and watch out for the hotels there, not all are nice and in the town itself there is nothing. But we were blessed with perfect weather on the top and perfect views. Eating hot pot is spectacular in Chengdu, but watch out how spicy it can be. Michael is just a perfect tour guide! He speaks super fluent German and has a very relaxed and competent style of explaining, which made the whole tour so nice. We love Chengdu and will definitely come back! more

Amazing Tibet experience in Sichuan
亨利是一个有益的引导他走出way to ensure positive experiences. Mr Wu was not only a safe and attentive driver on sometimes rough roads but also a great photographer, capturing shots of us as we toured. Henry went out of his way to talk to anyone around to help bring the place alive through stories so we had the opportunity to meet so many locals, real people, and hear about their lives. Another highlight was the opportunity to climb a 1000 year old watchtower in Danba and meet the local family who managed it. Truly magical. Henry was also a consummate foodie who provided us with great local food recommendations along the way. more

Panda heaven
We have just completed the Chengdu leg of our trip to China organised by Robert Hui at China Highlights. Our Guide for the 2 Day trip was Daisy Du who made us feel very welcome and helped us check in and ensured our rooms were satisfactory then gave us directions of where to go for the best food. The next day Daisy took us straight to the Giant Panda Breeding and Research centre. It was fantastic to see the Pandas so close. It’s a little sad that they are in captivity but it is essential to increase the breeding rate and so save these wonderful animals from extinction. We saw Pandas of all ages and sizes including a tiny little baby that was only 36 day old. After an extremely tasty lunch picked for us by Daisy she then took us into the people’s park and showed us the tea houses and dating area where parents can advertise their single ‘30 something’ children to potential partners. The day ended with a wander around Jinli Old Street where you can buy anything from food to souvenirs to furniture. We have had the best time in Chengdu helped no end by the friendly, helpfulness of our guide Daisy who knew all the best places to go and sights to see. Thank you Daisy, a great time was had by all. ---jayne_Stu Halifax, United Kingdom more

With other two friends I have visited Chengdu in September 2018 and our tour guide was Jason, who has been really amazing with us.He had the smart idea to bring us to the Pandas reserve very early in order to avoid the crowds, even if we were visiting Chengdu right during the Chinese national holidays. After the Pandas reserve, we visited the tea park and the city centre, where Jason could give us a lot of information about Chengdu. Chengdu and Wolong Panda base with Aaron
Aaron picked us up from the airport and drove us straight to the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center. We had a very enjoyable time touring the Research Center with Aaron. Even though he has probably been to the research center many times he seemed just as excited to see them as we were. Especially the babies! The next morning we headed to the Wolong Panda Base with a stop at the 2008 Earthquake memorial site. We had a great lunch in the small town of Gengda and then went on a hike in the Dengsheng Gorge with a local guide. The next day we did the panda keeper program which entailed cleaning cages (inside and out), feeding pandas, making panda cakes, watching a film about the program and walking around the base looking at the many pandas. After the program we drove back to Chengdu. While we were working Aaron took some great pictures of us cleaning and feeding the pandas. The next morning tour guide Snow took us to the train station. Aaron was such fun to be around, he spoke English wonderfully and gave us great info about the pandas. ---Cougfan Auburn, Washington, US more

Had a wonderful time on the panda keeper program which we booked through China Highlights. We generally avoid doing organised tours whenever possible as we prefer to do our own thing. Cecilia was our guide for the day and quickly made us feel at ease in her company she was interesting, knowledgeable and enthusiastic everything you want in a guide. The whole day was great and Cecilia certainly enhanced the experience, she took lots of photos for us throughout the day which was brilliant as it’s difficult getting photos together, she also provided us with buckwheat tea and biscuits which was a lovely touch. 3. A 17-Day China Itinerary with Tibet
With a 17-day itinerary, you could also choose to go to Tibet, one of life's must-see destinations for many, known for its unique culture and untouched beauty.

If you are interested in the Tibetan lifestyle, we can arrange for you to visit a local Tibetan family. You could talk to the host (with our guide’s interpreting) about the family’s life and help them with farming work.

4. A 17-Day China Tour of the Silk Road
The Silk Road is a great choice if you prefer an off-the-beaten-path route, especially you are interested in ancient grottoes, deserts, and Xinjiang with its exotic culture and unique landscapes.
9 to 10 days would be on the Silk Road with 7 to 8 days in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an:
- Days 1‒4: Beijing sightseeing
- Days 5‒6: Xi’an sightseeing
- Day 7: Zhangye (see “rainbow mountains” — a unique Danxia landform)
- Days 8‒10: Dunhuang (Buddhist grottoes, dreamy desert, and a remote section of the Great Wall)
- Days 11‒15: Xinjiang (a Uygur culture experience and Heavenly Mountain scenery)
- Days 16‒17: Shanghai sightseeing
The highlights of this itinerary are absolutely the scenery and cultural vibe along the Silk Road.
In Zhangye and Dunhuang, you would see marvelous landscapes with unique Danxia landforms and a beautiful oasis. Ride a camel through dunes in the pristine desert. Visit the old Mogao Caves to see fine murals and learn about how Buddhism entered China.
In Xinjiang, enjoy stunning scenery at Heavenly Lake and go to Urumqi's largest bazaar to feel the buzz of exotic life in the city furthest from the sea.
Visit China's largest mosque in China's westernmost city — Kashgar, and enjoy an afternoon tea in an ancient teahouse.
In Turpan, learn about the famous Karez Well System and unveil the secrets of how this ancient underground water project works. Don't miss tasting the sweet grapes and melons — regional specialties.
The Silk Road once reached across Xinjiang and extended into Central and western Asia. If you have the time and are interested in the whole Great Silk Road, see our21-Day The Great Silk Road Tour.
How Much Does 17 Days in China Cost?
For a private tour of China, the average cost per day is about US$220–350 per person, including flights/trains within China, 4- or 5- star hotels, lunches, attractions, guides, and private transport.
Thus, for a couple, a 17-day private tour may cost about US$7,500–12,000 in total. You could also invite your friends and their partners to join the trip. The cost would become more affordable with a larger group.
For a family of four, it may cost about US$14,000–19,000. Kids under 10 usually get 30–50% off. (International airfares are not included.)
The cost of flights from the U.S. or Europe to China varies a lot depending on when you fly and which airline you use, from around US$1,200 to US$3,000 for an economy round trip.
The Peak Season May Increase the Cost
Peak tourist times in China are the first weeks of May and October (China’s two golden weeks), summer holidays, and Christmas and New Year holidays.
The biggest price difference between the off and peak seasons is in the price of hotels and airfares. Their prices can go up by 50 to 100%.
Our refund policy minimizes the monetary risk to you when booking: you'll receive a 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights if you cancel up to three weeks before departure. (Seemore details)
