1. Choose Where to Go
With our knowledge of China and feedback from our customers, we suggest you visit Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai for your first trip, extending it to Guilin and/or Chengdu if you have the time.
1) Beijing — Explore China’s Imperial Past
As an imperial and modern capital of China, Beijing is a must-see, because it is home to many of the finest icons of China's medieval and recent past. It is alsoChina's top gateway city.
The Great Wall of Chinaandthe Forbidden Cityare both must-see attractions, especially if you are interested in China’s architectural marvels and dynastic history.
For a special experience and some private time,we can arrange a less-crowded sunset visit to the Great Wallwith a romantic picnic for you.
If you are interested in Beijing’s local lifestyle,a locally-guided walk through Beijing's hutongs和你的孩子或者丈夫/妻子是高度recommended.
If you want to try some new things with kids, we recommenda family morning tai chi session, a local home visit, trying Chinese calligraphy, and playing with a Chinese yo-yo.
- 4-Day Beijing Private Tour— our Essence of Beijing tour
- 2-Day Jiankou Wild Great Wall Camping Tour— add this on if you like
- 11-Day Beijing–Xi’an–Guilin–Shanghai Tour— our Classic Wonders tour
2) Shanghai — Explore Its Unique Blend of Old and New
If you want an intuitive sense of how China's recent past and present meet and collide, Shanghai is the place to go.
Hop on a ferry to cross the Huangpu River. You will see the historical architecture on the Bund as well as the modern skyscrapers opposite, giving you a distinctive contrast between modern life and the post-imperial past.
We havespecially designed an in-depth Bund culture discovery walking tourfor those who want to learn more interesting stories about the Bund and old Shanghai. See our2-Day Shanghai Essence Touritinerary.
If your schedule allows, extend your tour to Hangzhou or Suzhou to see water towns and classical Chinese gardens.
- 4-Day Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Nanxun Water Town Culture Tour
- 13-Day Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Shanghai Educational Family Vacation
- 13天的中国财富— Beijing–Xi'an–Guilin/Yangshuo–Hangzhou–
Suzhou–Shanghai
3) Xi'an — Discover China's Ancient Civilization
Xi’an is an excellent and interesting place to discover where the nation of China really began. China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, established the first capital of a united China there.
The Terracotta Warriors are definitely a must-see. We offer a more interesting and in-depth experience to learn more about the Terracotta Warriors:make a mini clay warriorwith local artisans and visit their disappearing cave dwellings.
For couples and families,a hanfu costume experiencein an ancient academy could be a highlight.A bike rideon the 600-year-old city wall is also great to do with kids.
- 11-Day Beijing–Xi'an–Guilin/Yangshuo–Shanghai Tour
- 2-Week Beijing – Xi'an – Chengdu – Guilin – Hong Kong
All our tours can be adjusted based on your needs. Justcontact us.
4) Guilin — A Relaxing Escape with Picturesque Scenery and Minority Culture
First-timers loveGuilinfor its beautiful landscapes and relaxing places to escape from the cities — it is a true masterpiece ofclassic rural China.
A Li River cruiseis the best way to enjoy karst peaks combined sublimely withthe Li River.
Yangshuo and Longsheng, two counties next to the city of Guilin, offer most of Guilin’s top highlights.
Yangshuo is a place where children can put down their phones and iPads and still be well entertained… bycycling around the idyllic countrysideand even experiencing the life and work of a Chinese farmer.
Yangshuo also offers a natural romantic atmosphere for couples.A romantic riverside candlelit dinnerset in a mountain retreat garden could be a great way to celebrate your 20th, 30th, 40th, etc. anniversary. Contact us to design a special time for you.
If you are interested inminority culture, the Longji Rice Terracesin Longsheng are really a highlight — both for enjoying the magnificent tiered fields and for experiencing the world of the Zhuang and Yao minorities.
- 5-Day Dynamic Guilin and Yangshuo Tour— Best for Summer Vacations
- 11-Day Family Happiness— Beijing–Xi'an–Guilin/Yangshuo–Shanghai
5) Chengdu — Have a Close Encounter with Pandas
Chengdu'sgiant pandasare for many the icing on the cake, the finishing touch to a China must-do list.
An even more special experience would be to have a close encounter with pandas by taking part inourgiant panda volunteer program— clean panda enclosures, make panda food, watch a panda eat it, and more.
Chengdu is also famous for delicious Sichuan food like kung pao chicken and spicy hotpot. A food hunting tour is the best way to taste the delicious specialties of Chengdu.
If you are interested in cooking, you can try cooking the most authentic Sichuan cuisine with a local chef.
2. Decide How Many Days to Stay
After a long journey to get to China, you probably won't want to just scratch the surface of China and just take snapshots with the landmark attractions.
We suggest you takeat least a weekfor your first trip to see a spectrum of the highlights in the top three cities: Beijing (3–4 days), Xi'an (2 days), and Shanghai (1–2 days). See our8-Day Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai Tourfor inspiration.
To discover more of China, like charming Guilin and lovely Chengdu pandas, you would need a few more days. See our11-Day Classic Wonderstour of Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin/Yangshuo, and Shanghai. SeeHow Long to Spend in China: Itineraries from 1 Week to 1 Month
Tibet is also open again for international visitors now [March 2023]. If you want to visit this pure land, you may need 3 to 5 more days. See our2-Week Private Tour of Beijing, Xi'an, Lhasa, and Shanghai.
All our tours can be adjusted based on your interests, travel time, group size, and other needs. Justcontact us.

3. Consider When to Travel to China
China's cultural and historical attractions are good for a visit all year round. Things to do in Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai are seldom affected by the seasons.
Spring(April–May) andautumn(September-October) are generally the most comfortable and recommended times for a China tour. They are neither too hot nor too cold, but fall is generally drier and warmer than spring.
A more ideal travel timefor you could be March and early April or September when there are smaller crowds, favorable prices, and still good weather.
China is agood summer holiday destinationtoo. There are not many rainy days in summer. It rarely rains continuously for a whole day, with rain coming in less and less frequent downpours as the summer draws on.
It can get a little hot in summer, but air conditioning and expert arrangements would help you avoid the heat as much as possible.

Shanghai Tour with China Highlights
We recently had the pleasure of going on a tour of Shanghai with China Highlights, and our guide, Ryan! This experience was wonderful, we were able to visit some of Shanghai’s most iconic locations, such as The Bund, the French Concession, and even got to try some famous Xiaolongbao at Jia Jia Tang Bao. Overall, really recommend China Highlights. more

Shanghai 1/2 day Tour
Shanghai is a modern big city with some stand out architecture modern and from the past. Ryan was again my guide for Shanghai City tour. We started with Yu Garden which was already flocked with domestic tourists! Yu Garden is the highlight of my Shanghai tour. Ryan explained and pointed out what makes it so special. The next thing we did was go to the Bund and Ryan #chinahighlights, explained some of the prominent old banking buildings and the clock tower tgat was made by the same person that did Big Ben in London. Also pointed out and we entered in disguise, was Peace Hotel. That was another highlight being an Art Deco style original and the Old Men Jazz Band. Then we walked a bit and our driver took us to The Shanghai Tower. Before you go up there is a whole display of Skyscrapers so you can see how the Shanghai Tower ranks. Going up was easy and you would never know you were going so high. It was a rainy morning but visibility was ok. You can walk all the way around to get a view of Shanghai. There were locks you can buy, marketed a "lucky", so you can lock your wishes up there. There is also a metal tree where you can ties a wish ribbon. We then went to the French Quarter which are some old buildings now occupied by modern venues and shops. I was told the area was a night spot so things were just opening. Nanjing Rd is the Retail Heaven thoroughfare, pedestrian only traffic. If you are shopping for name brand you will find it there, just like any other major city. Chinese tourists were out and about, I know they are happy! more

Shanghai's Best
My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by exploring China ; and first in our bucket list was Shanghai and Beijing. We booked this trip via China Highlights, and we had a tour guide , named Ryan, who made our trip memorable by not only sending us to Shanghai's best spots but most of all his rich knowledge on all these places. One of the best part is that he communicates very well, fluent in English, made us understand China's culture, its stories behind those buildings and sceneries. No doubt will recommend this travel site to our friends, "High Five" to China Highlights and again kudos to our tour Guide, RYAN, see you again !! more

Fun couple days in fantastic Shanghai!
Our family trip to China ended with a couple of days in historical Shanghai. We loved seeing and visiting the historic centers, traveling up the Shanghai Tower, eating delicious dumplings, and visiting the best Chinatown we have ever experienced. Our guide, Quing Quing, and driver Ken were fantastic, informative, professional and fun. Quing Quing even took us to experience the marriage market where Chinese parents try to help their children find potential mates after we expressed that it would be an interesting thing to see. Quing Quing, her American name is Clair, is an excellent and vivacious tour guide. Ask for her when you book with China Highlights you will be in good hands. --Inspire819460 more

Awesome Shanghai tour with Mary
与其他两个朋友我去过上海October 2018 and our tour guide was Mary, who has been wonderful with us.She had the smart idea to adapt the schedule of our planned tours in order to visit the city centre with few crowds, even if we were visiting Shanghai right during the Chinese national holidays. Besides the city centre with the panoramic towers, we visited the old French district, the Bund, the old city with the market and Tonglizhen, a water village just outside of Shanghai. Mary gave us also very nice suggestions about restaurants and hotels with panoramic terrace to visit in the evenings during our free time. In the end Mary was so kind to give us some Chinese salty pastries as lunch for our long train journey back to Beijing. Totally recommended!!! ---Vittorio C, Germany more

Thank you Daniel for hospitality & impressive touring!
首先,丹尼尔是一个非常友好的,娱乐ing & knowledgeable tour guide. Not only had he brought us to places in the schedule, but also helped in bookings when we went around the city on ourselves. He is online 24/7 and provided immediate responses for all the questions and inquiries. In addition, he ensured our safety not only during the trip with him, but also texted us to make sure we were back to hotel safely after our own schedule.Overall, he is more than excellent for us, as not only he had fulfilled his duty to guide us as scheduled, but more of providing us hospitality, help and knowledge beyond our exceptions and beyond what we have booked with the tour. Therefore, I would 100% recommend Daniel if any of you are planning for a trip to Shanghai. ---Catherinenodnod more

Wonderful trip to Shanghai, Suzhou and Tongli
Our guide Karen Wen made our trip to Shanghai, the garden city of Suzhou and the Water Village of Tongli very memorable and wonderful. Karen is very passionate with her job as a local guide. She has a lot of knowledge of every place that we visited which made us relate to and understand what we’re visiting. She took us to restaurants that served the best xialongbao and to an old restaurant in Suzho where we ate the best garlic shrimp and steamed fish. She also changed our itinerary when she saw how tired we were coming from Zhangjiajie. Our driver is excellent .I highly recommend you book your trip to China Highlights. Super Sophie Shanghai Tour Guide
A great tour guide brings all these buildings, the river, and most importantly the history to life. Sophie gave us an in-depth tour of the Bund, then took us across the river early in the morning to the top of the Shanghai Tower before it got crowded. The river cruise in the evening was spectacular and such an easy way to see the ever-changing illuminated skyline from so many varied perspectives. more

我们旅游护航,索菲娅李,是一位才华横溢的医院lity professional....our 3 generation family trip was engaged by Sophie due to her vast experience.....chosen out of some 40 applicants to escort US Ambassador to China Gary Locke or leading the LA Lakers Basketball Cheerleaders around town a couple of weeks ago....we chatted with locals on the street comparing our home cities....tasted the best Chinese breakfast burrito ever from a street side vendor. Sophie ensured the safe trek of my 86 yr old mother to the top of Tiger Hill in Suzhou, My mother who immigrated from Shanghai when she was 14 and a academic scholar was impressed with Sophie’s knowledge of Chinese history and literature..... The Garden Tour in Suzhou was more meaningful with the insights provided by her story telling (much better than audio tour you get at Versailles).....As far as the “value” of our custom tour... I would rate as excellent... our 4 star hotel was more than adequate.....good spa facilities, breakfast was very good, we had dinner in the Taiwanese Seafood restaurant and it was excellent....and relatively pricey....our tour included lunch - great stuff! We were able to select items, using advice from Sophie....sometimes we went over budget - may $6 or $8 extra .... it’s worth it to sample as much as possible... such high quality food! Getting hungry writing about food. Gotta go now ----Advntr18 Berkeley, California more

4. Consider Your Budget
Traveling in China is not very expensive. The biggest cost could be international airfares. The cost of airfares from the US or Europe to China varies a lot depending on when you fly and which airline you use, from around US$1,200 to US$3,000 for an economy round trip.
The peak tourist times in China fall on the first weeks of May and October (China’s two golden weeks), the summer holidays, and the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The biggest price difference between the off and peak seasons is in the price of hotels and airfares. Prices in peak season can go up by 50 to 100%.
For a private tour, the average cost per day is about US$220–350 per person, including flights/trains within China, 4- or 5-star hotels, lunches, attractions, guides, and private transport.
If you travel in the peak season, book at least 2 or 3 months in advance. When booking with us, you'll receive a 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights if you cancel up to three weeks before departure (more details here⇒).
5. We Believe Private and Tailor-Made Is Best
Our clients are talking to a local people.
A private tour is recommended for your first trip to China.
If you don't want to visit the Great Wall of China with a coach-load of 40 people and perhaps only have 20 minutes on the wall and so on, a private and tailor-made tour is definitely the better choice.
With our private tours, you would have much more personal choice in how your tour goes. You could have more hand-picked and interactive experiences, like walking on the "wild" untouched Great Wall or visiting a local family with your own local guide.
With private guiding and transport, we would maximize your time. You could focus on the sightseeing you want to do, skipping what’s not of interest and the long queues in the most crowded attractions.
Justcontact usif you would like a tailor-made private trip to China. We also offer economical, but still high-class and uncrowded, small group tours.
